Kitchen Remodeling in White Marsh, MD
More than half of White Marsh was built between 1970 and 1989, Census estimates show, and many of those kitchens keep original cabinets behind a closed floor plan. About 29% of homes date from 2000 or later and came with basic builder cabinets and counters. Solomon Construction & Remodeling replaces cabinets, counters, backsplash and flooring, adds islands, and opens walls where the structure allows.

What the job includes
- Full cabinet and countertop replacement, including quartz and granite tops
- Islands and peninsulas added where the floor plan has the clearance
- Closed 1980s kitchens opened to the family room after a structural check
- Backsplash, under-cabinet lighting and new flooring on one schedule
- Counter, backsplash and hardware upgrades for newer kitchens with sound cabinet boxes
What changes in a White Marsh kitchen remodel?
In most White Marsh kitchens, what changes is the layout and the surfaces, not the bones. The older group, from the 1970s and ’80s building wave, often still has original cabinets and a closed floor plan, with a separate dining room through one doorway and a family room through another. The newer group, from 2000 on, usually has an open plan already but came with basic cabinets and counters.
Those are two different projects, and we scope them differently.
Remodeling an original 1970s or ’80s kitchen
For an original kitchen, we usually recommend a full replacement. The sequence looks like this:
- Demolition of cabinets, counters, soffits and flooring.
- Repairs to the subfloor and to any wall damage behind the sink and dishwasher.
- Electrical work for new appliances and lighting, done by a County-registered electrical contractor under permit.
- Cabinet installation, leveled and scribed to the walls.
- Countertops, backsplash, appliances, flooring and trim.
The decision that matters most is often whether to open the kitchen to the family room. A wall between those rooms may be carrying load, so we check before promising anything. Removing a bearing wall is structural work and needs a County alteration permit.
Upgrading a kitchen in a newer house
Kitchens in 2000s and 2010s homes often have a workable layout with entry-level finishes. Here the work can be more targeted. A new island or peninsula, quartz counters, tile backsplash and under-cabinet lights may be all it takes, and keeping sound cabinet boxes saves demolition time.
On one install we paired white high-gloss cabinets with a marble-look island top and a matching slab backsplash. On another, our gray shaker kitchen, we paired light gray shaker cabinets with white quartz, subway tile and a black faucet. Either direction suits an open plan.
Planning the permit, including the airport check
Baltimore County ties kitchen permits to what you’re changing. Structural work and a newly created kitchen need a building permit, and so does any new wiring or plumbing through the trades. A plain cabinet swap isn’t clearly covered, so confirm for your address.
There’s one local detail worth knowing. When a job does need a residential alteration permit, the County’s checklist asks for an Airport Zoning Permit if the property is within 3.3 miles of Martin State Airport. We check your address against that radius while planning the permit.
Living with a kitchen under construction
A kitchen remodel takes the room out of service, so we talk through the schedule before demolition starts. We close off the work zone, clean up at the end of each day, and tell you in advance which days the water or power to the kitchen will be off.
New floors often run past the kitchen into the next room, and our flooring installation page covers that. For other rooms, see White Marsh bathroom remodeling or White Marsh deck building, and our main kitchen remodeling page has more on cabinets and counters.
Permits in Baltimore County
Kitchen permits in Baltimore County depend on scope. Structural changes and a newly created kitchen need an alteration permit, and any wiring or piping needs electrical or plumbing permits from County-licensed trades. The County doesn't say whether a non-structural cabinet replacement needs a building permit, so confirm for your address. Alteration applications within 3.3 miles of Martin State Airport also need an Airport Zoning Permit.

Kitchen Remodeling in White Marsh: FAQ
Can I add an island to my White Marsh kitchen?
Often, if there's room to open the dishwasher and oven and still walk around it comfortably. An island with a sink or outlets needs plumbing or electrical work, which brings a County trade permit. We measure and sketch options at the estimate.
Do I need a permit to remodel a kitchen in White Marsh?
It depends on the scope. Baltimore County requires a permit for structural work and for all electrical and plumbing work, but it hasn't clearly addressed a cabinet-and-counter swap with no structural change. Call the County's permit line at 410-887-3953 to confirm, and we'll flag anything in your scope that needs one.
Should I replace or keep my cabinets?
Keep them if the boxes are solid, square and laid out the way you want, and put the money into counters, backsplash and hardware. In 40-year-old kitchens the boxes are often worn at the sink base and hinges, and full replacement is usually the more lasting fix.
What is the Airport Zoning Permit on the County checklist?
It's an extra item Baltimore County lists for residential alteration applications on properties within 3.3 miles of Martin State Airport. It only matters if your kitchen job needs an alteration permit in the first place, and we check your address against it during permit planning.
