Three kinds of Reisterstown house
Reisterstown’s housing falls into three broad groups, and each comes with different rules.
The 1960s and 1970s houses are a large share of the town. At roughly half a century old or more, the projects are the ones you’d expect at that age: original kitchens and bathrooms, unfinished or tired basements, and decks that have been patched more than once.
The 1990s and 2000s neighborhoods are the other large group. Kitchens and baths in these homes are on their first big replacement cycle, and townhouse decks are reaching the end of their life.
Main Street and Glyndon are the small, old core. Few in number, these buildings need the most care: log and stone walls, Flemish-bond brick, wood windows and porches.
Our Reisterstown kitchen remodeling, Reisterstown bathroom remodeling and deck building in Reisterstown pages cover the specifics for each.
Which county issues a Reisterstown permit?
That depends on the parcel, because the 21136 ZIP is shared with part of Carroll County, which has its own permit office and rules. We look up the county before we talk about permits on any Reisterstown job. Everything on our Reisterstown pages about permits describes Baltimore County’s requirements. If your parcel turns out to be in Carroll County, we check that county’s requirements for your project instead.
Glyndon’s historic district and the Main Street listing
Glyndon, right next door, is a Baltimore County historic district, and that comes with real review. The Landmarks Preservation Commission has to approve exterior changes there. Replacement windows and siding are on the list. So are new fences and decks. Glyndon’s Victorian-era frame cottages and their front porches are exactly the sort of thing the review protects.
Main Street’s Reisterstown Historic District is a National Register listing. It brings no county design review on its own, but it opens the door to the county’s historic tax credit for eligible repair work. Kitchens, bathrooms and other remodeling-type work don’t qualify, while masonry repointing, structural repair, window restoration and roof repair can.
Four things we check on a Reisterstown parcel
Before we visit, we check four things about the parcel: the county, whether it sits in Glyndon’s historic district or the Main Street National Register district, whether county maps show floodplain on it, and whether it runs on well and septic. Each one changes what the permit asks for. Then we come out, measure, and talk through the scope with those answers in hand.
Older masonry and frame repairs
On the oldest buildings, the work is usually repair: rotted porch framing, failing siding and trim, and rooms that need new drywall, flooring and paint inside old walls. Our whole-home renovation page covers that kind of project. In Glyndon, start with the commission’s calendar. It meets the second Thursday of the month, except in August and December.
Homes in Reisterstown
Reisterstown was founded in 1758, when John Reister opened a tavern on the road that became Reisterstown Road. The Main Street historic district holds log, frame, stone and brick buildings, some from the late 18th century, with brick facades often laid in Flemish bond. Next door, Glyndon grew from 1871 as a resort community of 2 1/2-story frame cottages with one- or two-story front porches. Most of today's housing is much newer. In the 2020-2024 American Community Survey, about 19% of Reisterstown's 11,118 homes were built in the 1960s, 17% in the 1970s, 22% in the 1990s and 15% in the 2000s, and only about 4% before 1940. Some 47% are detached houses and 23% townhouses, and about 66% are owner-occupied.

What to know before remodeling in Reisterstown
Baltimore County or Carroll County
The 21136 ZIP code extends into Carroll County, so a Reisterstown mailing address doesn't settle which county reviews your permit. Baltimore County's rules apply only to Baltimore County parcels. Check your property tax record before planning any permitted work.
Glyndon is a county historic district
Glyndon became Baltimore County's first local historic district in 1981, covering about 164 acres. Exterior work there, including windows, siding, roofing, porches, steps, fences, decks and additions, needs Landmarks Preservation Commission review plus a building permit.
Main Street's National Register listing
The Reisterstown Historic District was listed on the National Register in 1979. That listing alone doesn't trigger county design review, but contributing buildings can qualify for Baltimore County's 20% historic tax credit for work like repointing, structural repair, window restoration and roof repair, if approved before work starts.
Well and septic properties
For Baltimore County parcels on well and septic, deck and addition permits need a site plan meeting the county's Ground Water Site Plan Requirements. Adding a bedroom also requires well and septic adequacy information.

Remodeling in Reisterstown: FAQ
My address says Reisterstown, MD 21136. Which county handles my permit?
It depends on where the parcel sits. The 21136 ZIP area crosses into Carroll County, so some Reisterstown addresses are permitted by Carroll County instead of Baltimore County. Your property tax record or the state's property search will show the county, and we confirm it for every job before discussing permits.
Do I need historic approval to repair my porch in Glyndon?
Yes, Glyndon is a Baltimore County historic district, and repairs or replacements of porches and steps there need Landmarks Preservation Commission review and a building permit. The commission meets the second Thursday of each month, except August and December, with applications due two weeks before.
Does the Main Street historic district restrict what I can do to my house?
It brings no county design review. The Reisterstown Historic District is a National Register district, which doesn't by itself trigger Landmarks Preservation Commission review. The county adopted a Main Street streetscape plan in 2025 with design guidelines, so ask the county whether they apply to your project.
How far is Reisterstown from your office?
Reisterstown is about 13.6 miles and 24 minutes without traffic from our office at 5812 Gist Ave, measured to the Reisterstown library by I-695, I-795 and Reisterstown Road. Allow 25 to 35 minutes in typical traffic. Before the visit, we check the parcel's county, historic status, floodplain and well and septic.
