First-Floor Gut Renovation

A first floor stripped to the stair framing and rebuilt with a finished staircase, LVP floors, painted walls and a compact kitchen.

Renovated entry hall with staircase and vinyl plank floor

Down to the framing

When this job started, the stairwell was open to the framing. Stair stringers and studs were exposed, old flooring was still down, and demolition debris covered the floor. Nothing finished was left to save, so we rebuilt the first floor from the structure out.

Rebuilding the floor

This was a full-floor renovation, the kind covered on our whole-home and rowhouse renovation page. Once the space was cleared, we closed up the walls and finished them. The stair got wood treads and white balusters, and it is now the centerpiece of the entry.

We ran luxury vinyl plank from the entry hall back through the hallway to the rear door. One floor throughout keeps a narrow first floor feeling continuous instead of chopped into rooms. There is more on this on our flooring installation page.

The walls went light gray with white trim. The rear hallway got the same floor and fresh paint as the front.

At the back of the floor we fit a compact kitchen with gray cabinets, granite counters, a stainless refrigerator and a gas range, plus a stacked washer and dryer. Putting laundry inside the kitchen footprint is a practical way to keep a small first floor usable.

The first floor now

The stairwell that was full of debris and bare framing is now a clean entry hall. It has a finished staircase, one continuous LVP floor and light gray walls. The hallway to the back door and the kitchen carry the same finishes, so the whole floor looks like it was planned together, because it was.

When a floor has to come down to the studs, drywall installation and repair is usually part of the same job.
